In accordance to the City of Ennis Code of Ordinances Section 5-26, the City's Planning and Zoning Commissioners serve as the Building Standards Commission and their power and duties are granted in accordance to Section 5-30 of the Code of Ordinances:

• The housing board of adjustments and appeals as referred to in the Standard Housing Code 
• The plumbing appeals and advisory board as referred to in the Standard Plumbing Code 
• The mechanical appeals and advisory board as referred to in the Standard Mechanical Code 
• The electrical appeals and advisory board under the National Electrical Code
• The building board of adjustment and appeals as referred to in the Standard Building Code
