PREPARE YOUR HOME

Review the quick info gathered below.
Get additional helpful tips here: https://tdem.texas.gov/prepare

Insulate Exposed Pipes

Exposed pipes, whether indoors or outdoors, are highly susceptible to freezing and bursting. Don't forget interior pipes in unheated areas like garages, attics, and crawl spaces. Outdoor hose bibs should also be protected with insulated covers to prevent freezing.

Let Faucets Drip

When temperatures drop, allowing your faucets to drip slightly can prevent pressure from building up in frozen pipes, reducing the likelihood of bursting.

Open Cabinet Doors

Leave the doors open under kitchen sinks and bathroom vanities to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes. This small step can make a big difference in keeping pipes from freezing.

Maintain a Constant Temperature

Set your thermostat to at least 55°F, even if you’re away from home.

Seal Cracks and Drafts

Cold air seeping into your home can contribute to freezing pipes. Check around windows, doors, and foundation walls for any gaps or cracks and seal them with caulk or weatherstripping. For larger gaps, spray foam insulation can provide an effective barrier.

If Needed, Be Prepared to Shut Off Your Water

Find your main water shut-off valve now (required for newer homes) to save you precious time in the event of a burst pipe.

If you notice a pipe has frozen or burst, turning off the water supply at the main shut-off, or the meter box as shown below, can help minimize damage to your home.
